Iowa Public Golf Courses
Home to world-class recreational and tournament play When more than 252,000 spectators turned out to watch the U.S. Senior Open in Des Moines in 1999, it was clear that golf had arrived in Iowa. In fact, with more than 400,000 active golfers in the state (ranked number one in the nation, per capita) and more than one half billion dollars spent on golf, the Iowa golf game is very big business and big fun. Building on the success of the U.S. Senior Open, enthusiastic fans greeted Senior PGA Tour players with open arms at the inaugural Allianz Championship at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines this August. The event offered the golf world a glimpse of the Iowa golf scene. Greater Des Moines was included in the tour along with other cities such as Maui, Las Vegas and Nashville, among others, showing that Iowa can hold its own. According to Iowa Golf Magazine, there are more than nine million rounds of golf played annually on Iowa's 377 courses.
